Dream Scholarship Winners 2025

The Merrill Law Dream Scholarship

We are happy to announce the Dream Scholarship Winner for 2025. First we will share a little bit of information about this award.

The Dream Scholarship was started in 2016 to help support the dreams of a current high school or college student looking to make a difference through the pursuit of their passion.

Applicants were asked to submit an image with a caption that in combination shares their dream and shows how it makes a difference.

Each year we present a $1500 scholarship to applicant who provides the most creative photo or image with a caption to explain their dream.

We are happy to announce that we have two winners.

Payton Langum

Payton Langum, dreams of being a Therapist.

This photo of me looking into the sunset represents the calm and clarity I hope to bring others as a future therapist.

My inspiration comes from the people around me who have silently struggled with mental health. Friends, family, and even myself. Seeing the power of simply being heard made me want to be someone who listens.

I’m planning to major in psychology and focus on therapy, and I’ve already started researching courses that will help me achieve my dreams.

I believe the difference will begin the moment I sit across from my first client and they feel safe enough to open up. Over time, I hope to help many people find strength, peace, and healing.

This dream matters deeply to me because mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it’s often overlooked or stigmatized.

I want to help change that. I came to this goal through my own quiet moments, especially while watching sunsets in Washington, where I’ve always felt a sense of peace and perspective. Those moments reminded me that I want to be a source of calm for others too. Someone who can help guide them through life’s storms with compassion and understanding.

Michael Ruiter

Michal Ruiter, dreams of being a Diesel Mechanic.

Who: Throughout the past year as I started working at Martin’s Feed in their shop, my dad has been the person who has encouraged me every step of the way.
What: This next year I will be continuing to work in our shop as well as attending Bellingham Technical College as a part of their diesel technician program.
When: After I finish my certification at Bellingham Technical College, I will be starting the transition into becoming head mechanic at Martin’s Feed.
Why: This is something that really brings me joy and has shown me I can do a lot more than I ever thought I could before.
How: Last year after discovering that what I had been planning on pursuing wasn’t going to be a good fit for me I spent a long time unsure of what I wanted to do.

I was mildly interested in mechanics and asked my dad if I could work in his shop just to try it out and make some extra money while I was at it. I quickly fell in love with it however and soon decided that this is what I wanted to pursue.

Congratulations to both of our winners.

Thank you to all of our applicants. We wish you the best as you move forward in life.

Text Ticket Scam

Did You Get A Text Like This?

Don’t Panic. It is a scam.

Please do not click the Link!

Lets Break the Text Down and Give You the Real Scoop

The Washington Department of License does not send texts about tickets.

If there is an issue with your license, you will receive a letter in the mail to the address on your license. This might be a good time to update your address with DOL. Not updating your address within 10 days of a move, can get you into trouble in a couple of ways.

Washington Has a Department of License not a DMV

  • “Washington Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 25.”

The WAC code is false.

  • “Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. In accordance with Washington Administrative Code 15C-16.003”

The Two Day Time is not in accordance with DOL Procedures

  • “if you do not complete payment by June 25, 2025, we will take the following actions:”

Suspensions Do Not Happen in this way

If you do not respond to a ticket, the DOL will send you a letter and the date gives 60 days for you to get things fixed.

The Text contains Spelling Errors

  • “1. Report to the DMV violation databas”

  • “2. Suspend your vehicle registration starting June 26”

If you do not pay a camera ticket, the late fees will accrue and they will have you pay the fees before you can renew your registration when it is due next time.

  • “3. Suspend driving privileges for 30 days”

Drivers License Suspensions have a specific process including written notification that is mailed to you. You can learn more about Suspensions here on the Department of Licensing Website.

Traffic Infractions are not payable at a Toll Booth

  • “4. Transfer to a toll booth and charge a 35% service fee”

Toll Fees are payable at a booth, or you may have purchased a Good To Go Pass, the associated fees are mailed to you or sent via the portals that you have registered to have the pass. Good To Go has more information about scams effecting them at this link.

Protect Your Information from the Scammers

  • “5. You may be prosecuted and your credit score will be affected”

Your Credit Scores and much more could be effected if you do not protect your information.

DO NOT Click the Link

Or follow any of the steps listed in the text to make your payment.

  • “Pay Now: www. WARNING THE WEBSITE LINK COULD BE HAZARDOUS
  • “Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes.”

4. Historic Everett Theatre

One of the oldest operating theaters in the state, the Historic Everett Theatre is a charming slice of history. It features a mix of live music, films, and theatrical performances—something for everyone. The intimate setting and historic architecture make it a unique place to experience entertainment, a nice change from the big, impersonal multiplexes.

5. Legion Park

Legion Park

Legion Park, also known as American Legion Memorial Park, offers plenty of green space, picnic areas, and bluff trails overlooking the water. It’s a great place for an afternoon stroll or a family outing. And if you’re there on the right day, you might even catch one of their seasonal events—perfect for connecting with the community.

6. And, of course, the Traffic Camera

At Broadway and 16th Street, there’s a traffic camera keeping an eye out for red-light runners. At The Corner- Evergreen Way and Casino Road

Evergreen Way and Casino Road might sound like just another busy Everett intersection, but there’s a lot more going on here than you might think. This part of town is full of surprises, and we’re here to show you what’s worth a stop. Here are five things you’ll find nearby—and, of course, a friendly reminder about that traffic camera.

1. Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum

Ever wondered what Everett has to offer in terms of aviation history? The Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum is just a short drive away. Founded by the late Paul Allen, this museum is home to vintage aircraft and military vehicles from World War II. The exhibits are meticulously maintained and often feature live demonstrations. It’s a must-see for history buffs and anyone with a curiosity about the engineering marvels of the past.

2. Schack Art Center

The Schack Art Center

Art lovers, rejoice! The Schack Art Center isn’t far from Evergreen Way and Casino Road, and it’s one of those places that has something for everyone. From glassblowing demos to workshops in printmaking and jewelry making, it’s a community arts center that’s buzzing with creativity. Even if you’re not into art, the rotating exhibitions are bound to spark some interest. Plus, it’s free—what’s not to love?

3. Howarth Park

A bit of a hidden gem, Howarth Park is the perfect spot to take a breather from city life. With wooded hiking trails, a playground, and even a bridge over the railroad tracks leading to a small beach, it’s got all the charm of a classic Pacific Northwest park. Bring your dog, bring a friend, or just bring yourself for a quiet moment by the water.

4. Everett Mall

Everett Mall Front Entrance

Everett Mall might not be the flashiest, but it’s a classic local spot for shopping and entertainment. Whether you need to grab a few things or just do some people-watching, this mall has you covered. It’s also a great place to cool down during those hot summer days—an oasis of air-conditioned comfort.

5. And, of course, the Traffic Camera

The traffic camera at the corner of Evergreen Way and Casino Road is here to keep things safe and steady. This intersection can get busy, and the camera’s main job is to remind everyone to take it easy. The Camera tickets do not go on your record.

If you’re in a rush, remember—nothing slows you down quite like a ticket. But if you do happen to get a little too excited and get pulled over by an officer, well, let’s just say we’re here for you and, well, you know who to call.

We’re Merrill Law, Everett’s premier firm when it comes to these sorts of things—whether it’s fighting a ticket or just giving you some advice on your options. Stay safe out there, and enjoy everything our city has to offer.

At The Corner- Rucker Ave and 41st Street

You might not have thought much about Rucker Avenue and 41st Street, but let me tell you, it’s got a few surprises up its sleeve. Our beloved Everett has its quirks, and this particular intersection is no exception. Whether you’re just passing through or you’re on your way to something specific, here are five things you didn’t know were right around the corner—literally. Oh, and spoiler alert: there’s a traffic camera, too.

1. American Legion Memorial Park

American Legion Memorial Park is a hidden gem just a short distance away. Not only does it offer fantastic views over the Snohomish River delta, but it also features tennis courts, picnic areas, and playgrounds—perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon. If you’re into hiking, the bluff trail offers a nice stretch of the legs with a pretty good reward at the end: sweeping views of the Puget Sound. Just try to keep your eyes on the road when you’re driving by, all right?

2. Hibulb Cultural Center & Natural History Preserve

A bit north of Rucker Avenue, you can immerse yourself in history at the Hibulb Cultural Center. This is not your average museum—it’s a deep dive into the heritage of the Tulalip Tribes. From the interactive Longhouse to the Canoe Hall, it’s packed with stories that take you back thousands of years before colonization. Plus, if you’re into cultural demonstrations, this place is known for its speaker series and even a celebrated film festival in November. A perfect spot for a day that demands a little more depth.

3. Jetty Island

Jetty Island, Everett WA

If you head west, you’ll find Jetty Island, a sandy stretch that’s like Everett’s answer to an island getaway. During the summer months, the city even runs a free ferry service to the island. It’s the perfect spot for a day out with the family—sand, sun, and maybe a little bit of kite flying if the wind is just right. Just be warned: your shoes might end up full of sand, and your face full of smiles.

4. Grand Avenue Park

This park is a bit of an unsung hero. Not only does it have a pedestrian bridge leading to the marina, but it also offers stellar views of the Everett waterfront, including a sneak peek at the naval station. There’s something very calming about looking out over the harbor, and it’s the perfect place to just let your mind wander. Take a picnic or just go for an evening stroll—either way, you won’t regret it.

5. Everett Farmers Market

Farmers Market, Everett, WA

You wouldn’t think a simple farmers market could have such character, but Everett Farmers Market proves otherwise. Open on Sundays, this market brings together local growers, artisans, and food vendors—it’s an absolute must for anyone looking to experience Everett in its most authentic form. Grab some fresh produce, listen to some live music, and get chatting with the locals. It’s community at its best.

6. And, of course, the Traffic Camera

Ah, yes—the inevitable traffic camera. Right there at Rucker Avenue and 41st Street, this trusty automated observer is ready to snap a picture if you’re getting a little too enthusiastic with the gas pedal. Just a reminder: this one’s been installed to reduce accidents, which means it’s all about keeping the community safe.  The Camera tickets do not go on your record.

But if you do happen to get a little too excited and get pulled over by an officer, well, let’s just say we’re here for you.

We’re Merrill Law, Everett’s premier firm when it comes to these sorts of things—whether it’s fighting a ticket or just giving you some advice on your options. Stay safe out there, and enjoy everything our city has to offer.

Dream Scholarship Winner 2022

The Merrill Law Dream Scholarship

We are happy to announce the Dream Scholarship Winner for 2022. First we will share a little bit of information about this award.

The Dream Scholarship was started in 2016 to help support the dreams of a current high school or college student looking to make a difference through the pursuit of their passion.

Applicants were asked to submit a picture with a caption that in combination shares their dream and shows how it makes a difference.

Each year we present a $1500 scholarship to applicant who provides the most creative photo or image with a caption to explain their dream.

Congratulations to our 2022 Dream Scholarship Winner.

Rebecka Goranson

Rebecka Goranson, who dreams of being a Speech and Language Disorder Pathologist.

I will be graduating high school with my Associate’s degree, then I plan to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. After completing my Bachelor’s, I plan to get my Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. It’s always been a personal goal in my career to help other people.

I attended speech therapy in early elementary school and having these first-hand experiences led me to discover my passion. Seeing for myself what a speech pathologist does, and how much of a positive impact they make in people’s lives was a definite addition to my passion.

Another factor that guided me to this major is frequently babysitting a boy with severe autism, which causes him to be mostly nonverbal. When I first started taking care of him it was frustrating not being able to understand what he needed or what he was asking for. And I’m certain it’s just as frustrating for him, his family, and other people, such as his teachers.

It would be fulfilling for me to become a speech pathologist due to the rewards (and challenges) of working with individuals and their families to discover the most efficient way that they could communicate with families and others.

Cookies Fun and Goals

This year our girls came from Troops located in Arlington, Granite Falls, Edmonds, Everett, Maltby and Mill Creek.

We asked what their Favorite Girl Scout activities were and their answers included:

The Mountain Shadows camp, which is a two night trip with sing-alongs, crafts and sports. Going on field trips to the pumpkin patch, zoo and the fire station. Earning badges, making ice cream, canoeing, animal tracking and other things like that.

But at the heart of the matter, these Girl Scouts loved Camp, Camping, Camping! And more Camping!!

Our Girl Scouts Fundraising goals for this year.

  • Raising money to donate Build A Bears for kids in the hospital.
  • Fundraising for camping and community service projects!
  • Saving our money for a big trip in a couple of years.
  • We are also sending cookies to the troops overseas.

We are happy to help these Girl Scouts meet their goals and pursue their dreams.

Dogs on the Job

Dogs on the Job

Dogs are on the job in the Courthouse providing support and encouragement. Their presence is giving some people the confidence to tell their story, and face the difficult, and daunting task of recounting a traumatic experience.

Canines for More Than Cops

We have seen many kinds of service dogs in our world giving back to the community.  The concept of Courthouse Dogs was pioneered in 2003 right here in Washington State.  A King County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney working in Seattle came up with this tool for the Courthouse as the result of a trip to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) with her son.

Raise Your Right Paw

In December of 2004, Deputy Prosecutor Page Ulrey entered training with “Ellie”.  They went through an extensive training program before graduating and returning home to King County to become what is believed to be the first official Courthouse dog.

Working Like a Dog

Courthouse dogs are in the business of providing emotional support with a soft look, a listening ear, an understanding wag, and comforting snuggle when needed.   They work several days a week assisting with witness statements and calming others in the high stress environment of the courtroom.

Speaking in public is difficult.

When in the courtroom there is the added stress of recounting the truth of possibly one your hardest days. Having a dog with you is like having an old friend there to help making it easier to talk, to remember, and to experience less anxiety.

Going to the Dogs

While it may seem surprising to see a courtroom going to the dogs, the results seem to be in the dogs favor.  They are a positive influence in allowing the truth to be heard so that justice may be upheld.

Atta Dog

We want to thank local members of this community who raise and train puppies to prepare them for many different acts of service.  Thank you to the trainers who work tirelessly to perfect these dogs specialized skills. Thank you to the partners who know and love these dogs best and put their services to work. Thank you to the Courts for Going to the Dogs!

To Shred or Not to Shred?

The Answer Is Shred…

Plan To Attend Our FREE Shred and Food Drive Event January 9th 2023 from 1 PM to 3 PM.

FREE, FREE, FREE!

That’s right, there is no cost to bring your documents to The Law Office Of Rick H. Merrill where office employees will be onsite to help you carry boxes.

Documents will be destroyed by Proshed, a professional document destruction service with a mobile shredding unit.

You can watch your documents be shredded right before your eyes!

Last year ProShred happily shred several tons of documents at our event.  The truck does not accept CD’s or Paper Clamps.

A very special thank you to the guys from ProShred for jumping in to help make the event run smoothly and even helping to carry in the Food Donations at the end.

Donate Non- Perishable Food Items…

While sorting through documents and clearing out the house grab any non-perishable goods you may want to donate to help us support our local food banks.

Each year we have been blessed by your generosity to deliver a carload of food and cash donations to the Snohomish County Food Bank to help those in need.

We look forward to another amazing Shred Event on January 9th 2023

Donate to Beck’s Place to Help People and Pets

We are  collecting donations for Beck’s Place in Monroe.

At Beck’s Place they are committed to helping people and pets move forward in life.  Keeping families together is important to Beck’s Place and pets are part of the family.

The signature program that they offer is a fostering service for those who must leave their pets for medical care, treatment, or other safety reasons.  Melanie, founder of Beck’s Place, mentioned that there are many seniors who will refuse care, so they do not need to leave or lose their pets.

Knowing that when they return, their pet will be waiting to rejoin the family is important to many of these owners and allows them to make the choices needed to improve their lives.

We want to thank Kaylan for the donation of these handmade scarves. Your kindness and thinking of others is appreciated.

Please Bring Your Donation for Beck’s Place to the Law Office of Rick Merrill

In addition to the fostering service, they meet needs related to food, supplies, cleaning, hygiene items, sleeping and outdoor supplies, and even clothing for both people and pets.

  • Cat and dog food
  • Dog sweaters or coats
  • Hygiene Items
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Sleeping or outdoor supplies
  • or other items noted on their website.
