Work Zone Camera Tickets
Washington Work Zone Camera Tickets are live: You could owe $248
Heads up if you drive I-5 or any state highway through Everett and Snohomish County. Washington has turned on work zone camera speed-safety cameras in active highway work zones. The goal is simple: to slow traffic where crews are on the ground and cut down crashes.
What changed
- The state is now using trailer-mounted cameras that rotate between active work zones on state highways.
- Tickets only apply when workers are present and when advance signs are posted.
- First violation is a $0 warning. After that it is $248 per citation.
How it works in plain English
- You pass signs that say the work zone is photo-enforced.
- If you are over the posted work-zone speed while crews are present, the system records your plate.
- A Washington State Patrol trooper reviews the evidence.
- If confirmed, a notice is mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner, typically within 30 days.
What it means for your record and insurance
This is treated like a parking infraction. It does not go on your driving record and is not reported to your insurance. You still need to respond by the date on the notice.
Where you might see work zone cameras locally
Expect cameras when there is active construction on state routes, especially I-5 through Everett and nearby interchanges. They move with the work, so locations change.
Why the state is doing this
Work-zone crashes have been climbing in recent years, and most injuries are to drivers and passengers. Slower speeds give everyone more reaction time and protect the crews who are improving the roads we all use.
If you get a work-zone camera tickets notice
- Read the letter fully. It explains how to pay, acknowledge, or contest.
- You need to respond by the date on the notice.
- Check the listed date, time, location, and plate.
- If you believe there is an error, follow the contest instructions before the deadline on the notice.
